Fly and bottom ash disposal

In coal-fired power stations, large volumes of fly and bottom ash are generated as a result of the incineration process, which must be either disposed or transported for further processing. Fly ash results from the combustion of pulverized coal under high temperature and is separated from the flue gas inside the power plant's electrostatic precipitators. Fly ash mainly consists of silicon, aluminum and iron oxides and can be processed as concrete admixture amongst other things.

Incombustible, larger, molten residues resulting from the combustion process are designated as bottom ash. Along with the unprocessed fly ash the bottom ash must be disposed in so-called ash ponds.

In terms of environmental protection and energy efficiency hydrotransport is increasingly used for this duty. Using the latest mechanical and electrotechnical equipment the fly and bottom ash is pumped to the place of destination by means of pipelines, some are over several hundred kilometres long. Industrial water or sea water is used as carrier fluid.

This application is managed by displacement pumps like for example piston pumps, hydraulically activated piston pumps and hydraulic diaphragm pumps.

Hydraulically activated double hose-diaphragm pumps from FELUWA offer the best preconditions because they are able to convey large solids with increased risk of sedimentation, allowing for a reliable transportation of critical bottom ash slurry over long distances.
